Welcome to Doncaster Markets - A Winning
Shopping Area
Doncaster market area has for centuries been a focal point for shoppers
looking for good quality products and bargain prices. Receiving its charter over
800 years ago in 1194, the market area is still a thriving area of the town. Stall
holders are a dedicated bunch. Nigel Berry, seen below in his fish stall,
has been working at the fish and game market as been supplying fresh and tasty
produce since leaving school in 1973 and is still as enthusiastic as ever. He
started work at 13 with a Saturday job, and enjoyed it so much he continued and
now has his own stalls and his his own band of returning customers. Nigel is
always happy to pose for a photo, give an interview to visiting television
crews, or entertain visiting school children who are doing seas-side studies.
One memorable class that visited even wrote a special poem and produced a book,
featuring 'Mr Berry'!
Loyal shoppers will keep returning to the busy markets, and Sir Harry Cryer,
Doncaster's very own Town Crier makes regular appearances with his stentorian
callings to welcome shoppers and those just browsing or enjoying the
entertainments which are a feature of this vibrant area.
Its not just fish, meat and game - there is a wide assortment of fruit and
vegetables, cards and calendars, sweets, breads, cheeses, olives, clothes, toys,
maps, tools, antiques, carpets and household goods, material, silk flowers, fast
food, slow food, mirrors - the list just goes on.
If you like personal service, fresh air, fresh produce and a friendly smile,
then come to Doncaster Market!
