Maltby Phoenix Sword Dancers are based in Maltby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The history of their sword dancing dates back to agricultural times, and then the days when mining was the main occupation of the villagers. Working men would perform sword dances to earn a few extra coppers to subsidise their meagre wages.
The tradition has been revived in recent years by pupils of the local secondary school. The enthusiasm of the girls has led to competition wins and a TV appearance. Paul Davenport played fiddle at the Tickhill Festival.
